Dream Cruise 2023: Classic cars and their fans take over Woodward

dream cruise detroit

Watch top drivers compete in the biggest racing event in the state. In the more populated areas, especially in Royal Oak, there are porta johns along Woodward Avenue. Ward lives in cargo pants, a T-shirt with the garage emblem and a baseball cap. The ride takes more than five hours, but it’s worth it to Page, who was waiting patiently to get a picture of an upside down van riding down Woodward. The car is priceless to Palmeri and contains custom details like the names and initials of his parents, Tony and Jean. "I learned a lot from him and you carry those skills with you the rest of your life and carry the memories because he's no longer with me."

Long live the 300

Attendees can hop on a free SMART dream cruise shuttle from 8 Mile to Pontiac. Passengers can board at any RED SMART or FAST bus stops along Woodward. Starting as early as Thursday, car enthusiasts will crowd Woodward and surrounding communities to showcase their wheels. It began as an effort by Nelson House plus a group of volunteers seeking to raise money for a soccer field in Ferndale. They also wanted to re-create the nostalgic era of the 1950s and '60s, with music and cars roaming down Woodward. The first year brought in 250,000 people and has grown each year since then.

Where is the Dream Cruise route?

Groups like Tri Five are the backbone of the Cruise, with members attending in 2020 during the pandemic even as risk-averse corporations backed out with the official event canceled. With the pandemic in the rearview mirror, Posey says Tri Fivers from all over the country will be coming this year, including members from Florida and New York. Further north on the avenue will be Chevrolet’s Birmingham display. Expect the new, 670-horsepower Corvette Z06 — engorged with the most powerful, naturally aspirated V-8 production engine ever produced —  to anchor a lot-full of the brand’s car and truck offerings.
